After seeing the happiness of the locals and contentment in their simple lives, with little want for more, it was clear that they had it right. This confirmed that perhaps I needed to swap the corporate world and the big city for something more fulfilling in the country side. Something for the soul. Something creative. Years of hard work had admittedly left little time for me to explore any creative pursuits. In fact, I never had really done anything with my hands at all!

Not only did this trip make me realise I wanted to do something more creatively stimulating, but visiting a near by beach became quite a defining moment. What had once been a beautiful cove I had visited a decade before, was now a 2 mile coast line covered in rubbish.

I still remember the shock - angry and upset I looked to blame but quickly came to the conclusion I was one of the people to be angry at. I had never even considered my input into the planet.

If the coast line wasn't enough, after talking to the locals and doing some research, it became clear that it wasn't just the ocean that was a huge issue. Deforestation is too. Indonesia is one of the worst impacted with a huge amount of modern day furniture going to the west sourced (not all, but in the main) quite irresponsibly. I decided it was important to turn concern into action, at least with myself.

With a lot of learning, loving and living along the way, the universe delivered! It came in the form of a global pandemic, but like with all difficulty comes opportunity. Wanting to purchase some furniture for my new home, it was now important to me to purchase something preloved, with a bit of character, but I couldn't quite find what I was looking for. I tried working on a couple of pieces myself, and thought of trying my hand at offering some of these lovely pieces to others, so that they too could have some history and character that was also a little better for the planet.

It wasn't long before House of H was born and a workshop in the city was needed. With a new space and orders to fulfil, an extra pair of hands came next - someone to assist in the day to day admin. That's where my trusty partner came in!

By July 2021, we decided that we wanted to get out of the city so recolated to The Cotswolds with an even bigger workshop and another extra set of hands. Now we had the right space we were able to launch our bespoke bathroom vanities service and could now work on much larger pieces.

It was always the dream to mix the old with the new, the characterful with the modern. House of H Furnishings now lives up to the name, with a range of homewares to compliment antique and vintage furniture. Now clients can not only see that older furniture can be mixed with the new, but they too can purchase it! We do as much of the hard work as possible looking into how things have been made, mostly by artisans. 

We hope to now pass some of that on to you, with beautiful pieces bringing your home & family much joy for years to come.
